In a recent interview with Arise News, Karl Toriola, the CEO of MTN Nigeria, made a bold promise: Nigerians will see significant improvements in MTN’s quality of service by the end of June 2025.
That’s a strong statement coming at a time when many Nigerians have been complaining about poor network coverage, dropped calls, and slow internet. So, what’s really happening behind the scenes at MTN?
A Sector Under Pressure
During the interview, Toriola painted a clear picture of the struggles facing Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. He spoke about the rising costs of running operations — from inflation to high fuel prices and currency devaluation. All these challenges are pushing the industry to the brink.
In fact, MTN and other telcos have submitted requests for a 100% increase in tariffs, although it’s unlikely regulators will approve such a massive hike.
So, What’s the Good News?
Despite all the economic difficulties, Toriola expressed hope — and more importantly, action. The Federal Government is rolling out 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables to boost digital connectivity across Nigeria.
MTN is also investing heavily in its infrastructure. According to the CEO, these efforts will start showing results before the end of June 2025. That means:
-
Better call quality
-
Faster internet speeds
-
Fewer dropped connections
-
Improved customer experience
Why Should You Care?
Whether you’re a student attending online classes, a business owner who relies on mobile data, or just someone who loves scrolling through TikTok — this change could affect you directly.
Better service could mean more reliable connections during exams, interviews, or important Zoom meetings.
What to Watch For
This isn’t the first time a telco has promised improvements. But with the weight of government support and MTN’s own massive investments, this time feels different.
Will MTN deliver on its promise? Or will Nigerians be left waiting once again?
We’ll all be watching as June approaches.
