The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway has been in the headlines and for good reason. With over 700 kilometers of road cutting across multiple states from Lagos to Calabar, this project could change the face of transportation and commerce in Nigeria. But the big question is: can it really be completed by January 2026?

According to the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, the answer is yes. Speaking to the press, he assured Nigerians that despite financial and environmental challenges, the highway will be ready in less than two years.

Quick Facts:

  • Route Length: ~700km, spanning Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.

  • Contractor: Hitech Construction Company Ltd.

  • Funding Model: EPC+F (Engineering, Procurement, Construction & Financing), with most of the risk on the contractor.

  • Original Plan: 10-lane expressway.

  • New Design: 6 lanes to reduce cost and environmental impact.

  • Expected Completion: January 2026.

  • Current Progress: Over 70% completed (as of May 2025), despite less than 70% of funds released.

Why It Matters

For students, entrepreneurs and daily travelers, this road isn’t just concrete—it’s opportunity. Faster transport, easier access to universities across states, and improved business logistics could all come from this one project.

But how realistic is this new deadline? Can the government and contractors deliver on time, or will this turn into another “white elephant” project?

Time will tell—but one thing is clear: this highway could redefine how we move and do business in Nigeria.
