In the early hours of Wednesday, tragedy struck in the Izge community of Gwoza Local Government Area, Borno State, as suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a deadly attack that claimed the lives of an army captain and a soldier.
According to reports, the insurgents stormed the village under the cover of darkness, taking the military by surprise. Despite efforts by the troops to repel the attackers, the fierce gun battle resulted in the unfortunate death of the commanding officer and one other soldier.
The Nigerian Army is yet to issue an official statement, but sources within the military confirmed the sad development. The identities of the fallen officers are being withheld pending notification of their families.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in parts of the North-East, especially in communities close to the Sambisa Forest and the Mandara Mountains, where Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters are believed to be hiding.
Residents of the area are calling on the government to increase security presence and improve surveillance in vulnerable communities to prevent future attacks.
