President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the current Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), is set to depart Abuja today for Lagos to spearhead the 50th anniversary celebrations of the regional bloc. The festivities, marking five decades since the signing of the Treaty of Lagos on May 28, 1975, promise a blend of historical reflection, diplomatic engagement, and forward-looking discussions on the future of West African integration. This milestone event underscores ECOWAS’s enduring legacy in fostering peace, economic cooperation, and regional stability across its 15 member states.

A Historic Journey to Lagos

President Tinubu’s trip to Lagos, the birthplace of ECOWAS, is laden with symbolic significance. The highlight of the celebrations will be a reenactment of the 1975 declaration that established ECOWAS, to be held at the prestigious Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Victoria Island. This ceremonial event aims to pay homage to the vision of the region’s founding leaders, who, five decades ago, laid the foundation for a united West Africa through economic collaboration and collective security. The reenactment will serve as a vivid reminder of the bold steps taken in Lagos to create a bloc that has since grown into a cornerstone of African diplomacy.
Following the reenactment, President Tinubu will deliver a keynote address at the iconic Eko Hotels and Suites. His speech is expected to reflect on ECOWAS’s achievements over the past 50 years, from facilitating free trade and movement to mediating conflicts and promoting democratic governance. As the leader of Africa’s largest economy and the current ECOWAS Chairman, Tinubu’s address will likely outline a vision for the bloc’s next chapter, addressing pressing challenges such as regional security, climate change, and economic resilience in an increasingly globalized world.

A Deep Dive into ECOWAS’s Legacy

The anniversary celebrations will also feature a comprehensive review of ECOWAS’s journey by Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, a renowned diplomat and Chairman of the NIIA. As a former Nigerian Minister of External Affairs, Professor Akinyemi brings a wealth of experience to the table, offering insights into the bloc’s evolution from its inception to its current role as a pivotal player in African geopolitics. His presentation will trace key milestones, including the establishment of the ECOWAS Free Trade Area, the adoption of the ECOWAS Passport, and the bloc’s interventions in regional crises such as the Liberian and Sierra Leonean civil wars.
A panel discussion at the NIIA will follow, bringing together diplomats, scholars, and regional leaders to dissect the successes and challenges of ECOWAS. Topics expected to dominate include the bloc’s response to recent coups in member states like Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, as well as its efforts to promote sustainable development and counter terrorism in the Sahel. The discussion will also explore how ECOWAS can strengthen its institutions to meet the demands of a rapidly changing global landscape, including leveraging technology and youth innovation to drive economic growth.

ECOWAS at 50

The golden jubilee celebrations, which kicked off last month in Accra, Ghana, reflect ECOWAS’s remarkable journey since its founding. Established to promote economic integration, the bloc has expanded its mandate to include peacekeeping, human rights advocacy, and climate action. Its 15 member states—Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo—represent a diverse tapestry of cultures and economies united by a shared vision.
However, ECOWAS faces significant challenges as it enters its sixth decade. Political instability in some member states, coupled with economic disparities and external pressures such as climate change and global economic shifts, has tested the bloc’s resilience. The anniversary celebrations provide a platform to address these issues head-on, with leaders like President Tinubu advocating for stronger regional cooperation to tackle shared threats.
