In a decisive move to uphold environmental regulations, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has shut down DONALD’S restaurant, a popular nightlife spot located at 14 Adebayo Doherty Rd, Lekki Phase 1. The closure, announced on May 17, 2025, stems from the establishment’s involvement in illegal waste disposal, a violation that has sparked renewed discussions about environmental responsibility in Lagos.
The incident came to light following a tip-off from the Lekki Estate Residents Association, which reported a white Ford van, registered in Abuja (GWA 136E), dumping waste along Bisola Durosimi-Etti Road. Acting swiftly, LAWMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, dispatched the agency’s Monitoring and Compliance team to investigate. The team apprehended two staff members of DONALD’S restaurant, confirming the establishment’s role in the illegal activity. As a result, LAWMA sealed the premises and initiated legal proceedings against the culprits under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law.
This enforcement action underscores LAWMA’s commitment to tackling improper waste disposal, a persistent challenge in Lagos. Illegal dumping not only pollutes the environment but also poses health risks to residents and undermines efforts to maintain a clean and sustainable city. Dr. Gbadegesin’s leadership signals a zero-tolerance approach, with LAWMA intensifying its monitoring efforts to ensure compliance across businesses and communities.
For residents and business owners in Lekki and beyond, this serves as a reminder to adhere to proper waste management practices. LAWMA encourages the use of authorized waste collection services and urges the public to report violations promptly. Together, we can build a cleaner, healthier Lagos.
