Abuja, Nigeria – May 12, 2025 – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed plans to amend the Electoral Act before the 2027 general elections, according to INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu. The announcement signals a proactive effort to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral framework following the reforms introduced by the Electoral Act 2022.
The 2022 Act brought significant changes, including electronic transmission of results and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which improved transparency in the 2023 elections. However, post-election reviews identified gaps that the proposed amendments aim to address. While specific details of the changes are yet to be released, the focus will likely be on enhancing operational efficiency and closing legal loopholes.
The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has welcomed the move but urged timely action to avoid last-minute legislative rushed changes. Stakeholders emphasize that early amendments will allow sufficient time for implementation and build public confidence in the electoral process.
INEC’s commitment to refining the Electoral Act is seen as a critical step toward ensuring a credible, transparent, and inclusive 2027 election. Further updates on the amendment process are expected as consultations with lawmakers and stakeholders progress.
