The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the technical errors that marred the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The decision follows a motion raised by Hon. Tersser Ugbor during a plenary session on Wednesday, highlighting the widespread impact of the glitch on candidates.
According to reports, the technical issue affected 379,997 candidates across 157 of the 887 examination centers, with significant disruptions in the South East and Lagos. The glitch led to poor performance, with over 1.5 million candidates scoring below 200 out of 400. JAMB has acknowledged the error and scheduled a re-examination for affected candidates from May 16 to May 18, 2025.
The House has tasked its Committee on Education with probing the cause of the glitch and ensuring accountability. The committee is expected to submit a report within four weeks, with recommendations to prevent future occurrences and safeguard Nigeria’s educational system.
This investigation underscores growing concerns about the reliability of JAMB’s testing infrastructure, as stakeholders call for robust measures to restore public confidence.
