Highlights from the 17th Headies Awards 2025: A Night of Celebration and Tribute

The 17th edition of the Headies Awards took place on April 27, 2025, at the prestigious Eko Convention Centre in Lagos, Nigeria. After two years of hosting the event in Atlanta, the Headies returned home with a night filled with glamour, memorable performances, and heartfelt tributes.

This year’s event introduced exciting new categories, such as “Soundtrack of the Year” and “Best Performer (Live)”, further expanding the platform to celebrate the incredible talents shaping the African music scene.

A Touching Tribute to Mohbad

One of the most emotional moments of the night was the posthumous recognition of the late singer Mohbad. His legacy was honored with three nominations:

  • Best Collaboration for “Egwu” with Chike,

  • Best Street-Hop Artiste for “Ask About Me”,

  • Afrobeats Single of the Year for “Egwu” with Chike.

His son, Liam, and partner, Wunmi, proudly received the award on his behalf, leaving the audience in a deeply emotional moment of reflection and respect.

  • Odumodublvck emerged as a dominant force, leading the pack with six nominations and winning major categories like Best Rap Single and Best Rap Album.

  • Davido continued his reign with a win for Artiste of the Year, while also shining in collaborations.

  • Juma Jux, Tanzanian singer and Iyabo Ojo’s son-in-law, was nominated for Best East African Artist of the Year.

Other major nominees included:

  • Ayra Starr, honored for Best Vocal Performance (Female).

  • Tems, who secured Best Recording of the Year.

  • Seyi Vibez, who clinched the Best Street-Hop Artiste award.
