A two-year-old girl trafficked from Abuja to Aba and sold for ₦100,000 (approximately $60 USD) was rescued on May 8, 2025, by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), authorities announced Friday.
The child, renamed Chiamaka Favor to protect her identity, was recovered in Aba, Abia State, through a coordinated operation with the Department of State Services (DSS). The suspect, arrested by the DSS and handed over to NAPTIP’s Abia Command, allegedly collaborated with three trafficking syndicates based in Abuja. NAPTIP stated that the toddler was sold to a buyer for ₦100,000, highlighting the grim reality of human trafficking networks in Nigeria.
According to a NAPTIP statement, investigations are underway to uncover further details about the trafficking ring and to identify additional suspects. The agency emphasized the importance of dismantling such syndicates to prevent future incidents.
NAPTIP is urgently seeking the public’s help to reunite Chiamaka with her biological parents. “We call on the biological parents or any relatives of the child to contact the Agency immediately,” the statement read. Authorities have not released further details about the child’s condition or the suspect’s identity, pending ongoing investigations.
The rescue underscores Nigeria’s ongoing battle against human trafficking, with children being particularly vulnerable. NAPTIP and other agencies continue to advocate for stronger measures to combat trafficking and protect at-risk populations.
The public is encouraged to provide any information that could assist in reuniting the child with her family by contacting NAPTIP directly. Updates on the case will be provided as investigations progress.
