The Federal High Court in Abuja will tomorrow, May 13, 2025, hear contempt claims filed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The case centers on an alleged social media post by Akpoti-Uduaghan, which Akpabio’s legal team claims violated a court order barring both parties from discussing the case publicly.
Justice Binta Nyako, presiding over the matter, has emphasized that the contempt issue must be resolved before addressing the substantive case. The court’s April 4, 2025, order prohibited media interviews and social media posts about the dispute, which originated from a disagreement over Senate seating arrangements and escalated with Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio, which he denies.
In a counter-move, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a contempt charge against Akpabio, the Senate, and others, alleging that her six-month Senate suspension and other actions violated a March 4, 2025, court order. Both sides accuse each other of flouting judicial directives, intensifying the legal battle.
The outcome of tomorrow’s hearing could significantly impact the ongoing dispute and the reputations of both lawmakers. The case has drawn widespread attention, raising questions about judicial authority and political accountability in Nigeria’s Senate. Further updates are expected as the court proceedings unfold.
