In a significant development for Nigeria’s academic community, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Professor Chris Piwuna as its new National President. The election took place during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held on Sunday, May 11, 2025, in Benin City, Edo State. Prof. Piwuna succeeds Professor Victor Emmanuel Osodeke, whose tenure has now concluded.
Prof. Piwuna, a distinguished consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, emerged victorious in a tightly contested race against Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. His election marks a new chapter for ASUU, as the union navigates critical challenges facing Nigeria’s university system.
The congress, hosted at the University of Benin, was a pivotal moment for ASUU, with delegates from various university chapters across the country converging to elect new leadership. Prof. Piwuna’s victory has sparked optimism among members, given his extensive experience in academia and administration. His background in psychiatry and student affairs positions him uniquely to address both the intellectual and welfare concerns of ASUU members.
However, Prof. Piwuna steps into the role at a challenging time. ASUU continues to grapple with issues such as the contentious sharing formula for Earned Academic Allowances, the growing brain drain in Nigeria’s universities, and the ever-present threat of industrial action. These challenges have long defined ASUU’s advocacy for better funding, improved working conditions, and autonomy for Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
As the new president, Prof. Piwuna is expected to lead with strategic vision, fostering dialogue with the federal government to resolve lingering disputes while championing the welfare of academic staff. His leadership will be closely watched, especially as the union seeks to address systemic issues that have hindered the growth of Nigeria’s education sector.
The ASUU presidency comes with immense responsibility, and Prof. Piwuna’s tenure will likely shape the future of academic unionism in Nigeria. Stakeholders in the education sector are hopeful that his administration will bring renewed energy and solutions to the table.
Stay tuned for updates on ASUU’s activities and Prof. Piwuna’s plans as he assumes leadership of one of Nigeria’s most influential unions.
