The Oyo State Government has approved ₦4.5 billion to support victims and survivors of the January 16, 2024, Bodija explosion in Ibadan, which killed five people, injured 78, and damaged 55 houses. The decision was made during a State Executive Council meeting, as announced by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade.
The funds will aid those affected by the blast, caused by illegal storage of mining explosives on Adeyi Avenue. This allocation adds to over ₦200 million already spent on accommodation, medical bills, feeding, and security for victims. The government also plans to revoke the titles of two properties at the explosion site and build a monument in memory of the deceased.
Oyelade condemned disinformation about the state’s response, urging the public to rely on verified information. The initiative reflects Oyo State’s commitment to supporting the Bodija community’s recovery and preventing future tragedies.
