Atalanta secured their place in next season’s Champions League with a 2-1 win against AS Roma in a thrilling Serie A match at Gewiss Stadium on May 12, 2025. The result moved Atalanta to third place with 71 points, seven clear of fourth-placed Juventus and fifth-placed Lazio, guaranteeing their fifth Champions League appearance since 2019.
The home side struck early, with Ademola Lookman scoring in the ninth minute, assisted by Charles De Ketelaere, to notch Atalanta’s 100th goal across all competitions this season. Roma responded before halftime through a header from former Atalanta midfielder Bryan Cristante, leveling the score. The decisive moment came in the 76th minute when substitute Ibrahim Sulemana’s low strike from outside the box found the net, confirmed after a VAR review, ending Roma’s 19-match unbeaten league run.
A controversial penalty awarded to Roma in the 60th minute for a clash between Atalanta’s Mario Pasalic and Roma’s Manu Kone was overturned by VAR, preserving Atalanta’s momentum. Coach Gian Piero Gasperini praised his team’s resilience, noting their recovery from a challenging season to compete with Italy’s elite.
Roma, now sixth with 63 points, face an uphill battle to secure a Champions League spot with matches against AC Milan and Torino remaining. The loss leaves them one point behind Juventus and Lazio, keeping their hopes alive but precarious.
Atalanta will face Genoa and Parma in their final games, aiming to cap a stellar campaign, while Roma must regroup to salvage their European ambitions.
