On Sunday, May 11, 2025, a devastating accident on Eko Bridge inward Alaka, Lagos, claimed the lives of two dispatch riders in a horrific collision involving two Mack trucks. The incident, reported by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), underscores the dangers of reckless driving and the need for heightened road safety measures.
According to LASTMA, the crash involved two fully loaded Mack trucks, registered as T-10357 LA and KJA 107 XM. Preliminary investigations suggest that one driver, allegedly speeding and dozing off, lost control, causing a violent collision with the second truck. The impact dislodged a 20-foot container from one of the vehicles, which tragically fell on the dispatch riders, crushing them at the scene. Both riders were confirmed dead on arrival.
In the aftermath, LASTMA officers acted swiftly, rescuing a severely injured truck driver who was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. However, the drivers of both trucks fled the scene, complicating efforts to ascertain further details. To manage the chaos and ensure public safety, LASTMA cordoned off the accident site and diverted traffic through Costain Roundabout, urging motorists to remain patient during the disruption.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA’s General Manager, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased riders and called for greater responsibility among drivers, particularly those operating articulated vehicles. “This tragic loss of life could have been avoided with adherence to basic road safety principles,” he stated, emphasizing the need for vigilance and compliance with traffic regulations.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by dispatch riders and other road users in Lagos’ bustling traffic.
