Newcastle United secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday in a Premier League encounter that could prove decisive in the race for Champions League qualification.
Sandro Tonali opened the scoring for the hosts just two minutes into the match, while Chelsea’s night was further complicated when striker Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the first half. Bruno Guimarães sealed the win with a late goal as Newcastle moved up to third place on the league table.
Newcastle struck early through Tonali, who punished a poor defensive error by Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia. The Italian midfielder latched onto a misplaced pass and calmly finished to give the Magpies a 1-0 lead inside the opening moments.
Chelsea’s situation worsened in the 35th minute when forward Nicolas Jackson received a red card for violent conduct. Initially shown a yellow card for elbowing Sven Botman, the decision was upgraded to a red following a VAR review.
Despite being a man down, Chelsea managed to hold off Newcastle’s advances for most of the second half. However, their resistance was finally broken in the 90th minute when Bruno Guimarães found space outside the box and fired in a deflected shot to make it 2-0.
The result pushes Newcastle into third place with 66 points, putting them in a strong position to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League. Chelsea, now in fifth, remain tied with Aston Villa and just two points ahead of Nottingham Forest.
