Minna, the capital of Niger State, is set to make aviation history as commercial operations kick off at the newly renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. This milestone marks a major step forward in the state’s vision to develop a modern air transport ecosystem that fosters investment, tourism, and economic growth.
A Strategic Move for Northern Nigeria
Formerly known as Abubakar Imam International Airport, the facility was renamed in March 2024 to honor President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his contributions to the development of Niger State. With this rebranding comes a new wave of upgrades and plans for improved connectivity across Nigeria.
According to Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, the airport’s transformation aligns with his administration’s broader vision to turn Niger State into a strategic economic hub in North Central Nigeria. Speaking ahead of the launch, the governor described the development as “a bold step toward opening the state up to global investment and tourism opportunities.”
Overland Airways to Lead the Charge
To jumpstart operations, Overland Airways has been selected as the pioneer airline to offer scheduled passenger services at the airport. The airline will operate a tri-weekly service connecting Minna to Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria’s two most prominent cities.
